Language and Literacy
Czech is the official language of the Czech Republic, which has a linguistically homogenous population. In 2015, immigrants (mostly Slavs) composed 4.3 percent of the population, although immigration has increased in recent years.1,2 Though the language of instruction is Czech, ethnic minority students are guaranteed the right to education in their mother tongue as appropriate for the development of their ethnic community. Schools for national minorities exist through the upper secondary level. With the exception of Poles, the minority population is scattered throughout the country. As such, the only official minority language schools in the country are Polish. The percentage of students who receive Polish instruction in basic schools is 0.2 percent.3
