Use and Impact of PIRLS
Ontario benefits from participating in national and international assessments that provide external measures of student achievement and the Education Quality and Accountability Office’s provincial assessment program, which contribute to Ontario’s overall vision of achieving excellence in education. Its renewed goals for education are achieving excellence, ensuring equity, promoting students’ well-being, and enhancing public confidence.26 PIRLS reports are used as part of the information gathered to inform the curriculum review cycle.
Participation in national and international assessments has confirmed that, over time, Ontario students have improved their achievement on national and international assessments in mathematics, science, and reading.
