Special Reading Initiatives
From 2013 to 2015, the Ministry of Education and Culture funded a three year national program called Joy of Reading. The aim of this program was to develop comprehensive reading skills in children and young people, and to promote the joy of reading of children and young people between the ages of 6 and 16 through cooperation between schools, libraries, and homes.32 Even though the funding has ended, the results and reading instructions produced for this program still are in use.
The Finnish core curriculum was renewed by the end of 2014 and implemented in the autumn of 2016. The cross-curricular themes of thinking and learning, cultural competence, interaction and expression, multiliteracy, and ICT competence in the new curriculum strongly support the objectives of Mother Tongue and Literature.
