Monitoring Student Progress in Reading
Throughout the school year, teachers continually assess students’ reading abilities with quizzes, projects, participation, presentation, and oral and written work. Examinations also are used as means of assessment, and they increase in weight at the higher grades. During Cycle One, assessment is 100 percent classroom-based. In Grades 5 to 8, 30 percent of a student’s grade is based on school developed tests and 70 percent is based on formative classroom assessment. All examinations are developed at the school and regional levels, with the exception of Grades 10 and 12. Because Grade 10 marks the end of basic education, core examinations in mathematics, science, Arabic language, and English language for this grade are prepared by the Ministry and administered regionally. The Grade 12 matriculation examination, which marks the end of schooling, is prepared and graded centrally. Students who pass the examination receive a diploma that serves as the basis of entry into universities and colleges, and is the means by which scholarships are awarded.
