Special Reading Initiatives
Bahrainʼs Ministry of Education is aware of the importance of reading Arabic for students to gain linguistic skills and as a tool to acquire knowledge in the other subjects. The Ministry has adopted initiatives such as My Arabic Library Project, which has been conducted since the 2005−2006 school year in collaboration with the International Scholastic by establishing a classroom library in primary schools. These libraries contain books that include international stories to enhance studentsʼ knowledge of the environment and the animal world, to help students develop their reading skills in order to acquire positive values, and to encourage students to become enthusiastic about reading. A teacherʼs guide including instructions and methods for achieving the objectives of the project also was provided.
The Literacy Strategy Project initiative was launched according to Ministerial Order No. 164 (2015 to 2019). Plans for the project include the Shared Reading Program, which has been applied only for first cycle students in the form of regulated shared reading classes and activities. Implementation of the program is based on a guide that describes the procedures and processes.
