Language/Reading Curriculum in the Fourth Grade
Reading Policy
Reading, writing, speaking, and listening are the four basic skills in the Arabic language curriculum. The methodology of Arabic language instruction strives to achieve a balanced integration of these skills.
Summary of National Curriculum
According to Kuwait’s General Education Plan, students acquire basic language skills in Grades 1 to 3. The instructional time devoted to Arabic language comprises ten 45 minute lessons per week in Grades 1 to 2, nine lessons per week in Grades 3 to 4, and six lessons per week in Grades 5 to 6. Nearly 25 percent of instructional time during these lessons is spent on reading instruction. The fourth grade students who participated in PIRLS 2016 received four full years of Arabic language instruction at the time of the assessment.
The Ministry of Education has established school libraries that contain numerous supplementary reading texts to encourage and support reading in schools.
